Overview

Phuntsholing

Phuntsholing, also spelled as Phuentsholing, is a border town in southern Bhutan and is the administrative seat of Chukha District. The town occupies parts of both Phuentsholing Gewog and Sampheling Gewog.

Paro

Paro is a valley town in Bhutan, west of the capital, Thimphu. It is the site of the country’s only international airport and is also known for the many sacred sites in the area. North of town, the Taktsang Palphug (Tiger’s Nest) monastery clings to cliffs above the forested Paro Valley. Northwest of here are the remains of a defensive fortress, Drukgyel Dzong, dating from the 17th century.

Thimphu

Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, occupies a valley in the country’s western interior. In addition to being the government seat, the city is known for its Buddhist sites. The massive Tashichho Dzong is a fortified monastery and government palace with gold-leaf roofs. The Memorial Chorten, a whitewashed structure with a gold spire, is a revered Buddhist shrine dedicated to Bhutan’s third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.

Punakha

Punakha is a town in the Himalayas of Bhutan. It's known for the Punakha Dzong, a 17th-century fortress at the juncture of the Pho and Mo Chhu rivers. The fortress hosts the Punakha Tshechu, a religious festival featuring masked dances and music. In the surrounding Punakha Valley, temples include the fertility-focused Chimi Lhakhang and the hilltop Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, which has river and mountain views.

Wangdue

Wangdue Phodrang District is a Thromde and dzongkhag of central Bhutan. This is also the name of the dzong which dominates the district. The name is said to have been given by the Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal who was searching for the best location for a dzong to prevent incursions from the south.

Day 1

IXB Airport - Phuentsholing

Departure from Chennai airport. Meet & Greet on arrival at IXB Airport and transfer to Phuentsholing (961 ft.) - The Gateway of Bhutan by Road from India. It is a thriving commercial centre on the northern edge of the Indian Plains. On arrival check in at the hotel. In the evening, you may choose to relax at the hotel or walk around the Phuentsholing town. Overnight stay at Phuentsholing

Day 2:

Phuentsholing - Thimphu

After breakfast, and transfer to Thimphu (7,710 ft.) the capital city of Bhutan. On the way, stop at places to view scenery and for Photography. On arrival check in at the hotel. Rest of the day at leisure. Overnight stay at Thimphu.

Day 3:

Thimphu Sightseeing - Punakha/Wangdue

After breakfast, visit the Kuenselphodrang (Buddha Dordenma). It is located at a short drive from Thimphu City Centre. The largest statue of Buddha in the country sits here which houses over one hundred thousand smaller Buddha statues. Then visit the National Memorial Chorten built in the memory of the Third King of Bhutan and visit the Folk Heritage Museum. Afternoon, transfer to Punakha / Wangdue Phodrang (4,298 ft.), on the way Stop at Dochu-La-Pass (10334 ft.) Another attraction is the 108 chorten/stupas (Druk Wangyel Chortens) built close to each other surrounded by numerous colourful prayer flags. On arrival at Punakha check in at the hotel. Evening free for leisure. Overnight stay at Punakha / Wangdue.

Day 4:

Punakha/Wangdue - Bumthang

After breakfast check out from hotel and then drive to Bumthang. Further on the way visit the Chendebji Chorten, built in the style of the great Boudhanath Chorten of Nepal. Drive further to Trongsa. Visit the Ta Dzong, an ancient watch tower which is currently a museum. After passing through cultivated fields for a while, the road re-enters the forest till the Yotongla Pass (11,155 ft.). On the way, visit the Yathra Weaving Factory at the Chhumey Valley. On arrival check in at the hotel. Overnight stay at Bumthang.

Day 5:

Bumthang Sightseeing

After breakfast, visit Jakar Dzong - Literally meaning the Castle of White Bird. Then visit Lamey Goemba - A large palace and monastery built in 18th century by Dasho Phuntsho Wangdi. Post that visit the Jambay Lhakhang, built by King Srongsen Gampo of Tibet. The original palace was made of Iron and hence the name “Chakhar”. Finally visit the Kurjey Lhakhang, named after body print of Guru Rinpoche. In the afternoon visit the Tamshing Lhakhang. Then drive to Membartsho, literally meaning, “The burning Lake”). Drive back to Hotel. Overnight stay at Bumthang.

Day 6:

Bumthang - Punakha/Wangdue via Gangtey / Phobjikha Valley

After breakfast transfer to Punakha/Wangdue (4,298 ft.). En route, visit Gangtey Valley (9,842 ft.). After that explore the Phobjikha valley, one of the most beautiful glacial valleys in the Himalayas. The valley is also the winter roosting place for the endangered Black Necked Cranes which migrates from the arid plains of Tibet. Towards late afternoon, drive to Punakha. Overnight stay at Punakha/Wangdue.

Day 7:

Punakha/Wangdue Sightseeing - Paro

After breakfast, visit Punakha Dzong. After that take a short and easy hike to visit the Chhimi Lhakhang - The Temple, also known as “The Temple of Fertility” was built by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, “The Devine Mad Man”. Afternoon, transfer to Paro (7,480 ft.). On arrival check in at the hotel. Evening free for shopping and to stroll around the local market. Overnight stay at Paro.

Day 8:

Paro Sightseeing

After breakfast start full day sightseeing covering Ta Dzong - Originally built as a watchtower, it is now the National Museum of Bhutan with an excellent collection of Bhutanese antiquities, Rinpung Dzong - consecrated in 1645 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal on the site of smaller fort. Afternoon, visit the Drukgyel Dzong . On a clear day experience a beautiful view of Mt. Jhomolhari (24035 ft.); from here. Then visit the Kichu Lhakhang. In the evening, explore the Paro Town. Overnight stay at Paro.

Day 9:

Paro - Phuentsholing

After breakfast check out from hotel and transfer to Phuentsholing. On arrival check in at the hotel. In the evening, you may choose to relax at the hotel or walk around the Phuentsholing town. Overnight stay at Phuentsholing.

Day 10:

Phuentsholing - IXB Airport

After breakfast check out from the hotel and drive to IXB Airport for your onward journey.
